A research organization says they’re facing a bear problem with their trail cameras. On five separate occasions, a mama bear and three cubs were caught on video actively destroying the cameras.

The Voyageurs Wolf Project shared all the clips from the incidents in an Instagram post.

Each video shows the mother bear followed closely by her cubs. They then approach the cameras and knock them to the ground. As the cubs grow, they start taking part in the camera destruction.

In the post, the organization jokingly added, “‘Fool us once, shame on you! Fool us 5 times, shame on us!’ You might be tempted to think, ‘They just look so cute and sweet and innocent!’. But don’t be fooled. These are highly-trained deviants prowling the woods in search of technology to destroy.”

Trail cameras aren’t cheap. In the post, the Voyageurs Wolf Project says they want to thank the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund for supporting the project.

The organization primarily focuses on wolves during the summer in northern Minnesota. You can see a camera that watches wolves here.

We can’t spend all day outdoors. Work demands and other priorities keep us in the office or home on the couch. However, a few clicks give you access to an outdoor live stream to enjoy wildlife or a beautiful view.

Numerous studies prove spending time outdoors is packed with mental health benefits. Even more surprising, newer studies show simply looking at nature may have positive results. In the study shared earlier this year, around 50 college students were exposed to nature virtually. As a result, many had decreased anxiety. The study found those who were passionate about the outdoors benefited even more from the virtual experience.

So whether you just like to watch live cameras or need a mental vacation, here are some of the best livestreams you can find on Explore.org

Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park

If you love grizzly bears, fishing, or grizzly bears fishing, this is the camera for you. Positioned in Alaska’s Katmai National Park, the camera often captures grizzly bears fishing for salmon. A few other types of wildlife occasionally show up as well, but the bears are the highlight. The best part is it’s relatively easy to catch a glimpse of some bears, even in the dark and early hours of the Alaskan morning.

Orcalab in British Columbia

This is the destination for foggy seaside cameras capturing the Pacific coast. Orcalab is an organization that has studied whales for five decades. The organization’s set of cameras gives viewers worldwide an occasional glimpse of a pod of orcas moving through the area. Other wildlife you could spot include sea birds, dolphins, and sea lions.

Northern Lights in Manitoba, Canada

This camera located in far northern Canada is something you’ll have to keep in mind for the evening. The camera is positioned directly under the aurora oval, one of the best places to spot the aurora borealis or Northern Lights. Outside the Churchill Northern Studies Center, the daytime livestream won’t bring much, but good things come to those who wait. Be sure to watch this camera closely, especially in late winter and early spring.

Underwater Manatee-Cam at Blue Spring State Park, Florida

For some relaxing zen moments, few animals are gentler and more calming to watch than a manatee. The animal, nicknamed sea cow, quietly grazes underwater. This camera at a Florida state park is a great way to see the animals up close. The warm spring water at the park attracts hundreds of manatees a year.

Waimea Bay Cam in Oahu, Hawaii

You can go on vacation from your desk chair with this live stream on the north shore of Oahu. The beach is known as the birthplace of big wave surfing, so expect to catch a talented surfer shredding the massive swells occasionally. If nothing else, watching the relaxing crashing of the waves almost lets you smell the salty air.

Have you checked out any livestreams on Explore.org? Which is your favorite?

Nature is putting on a show within a Hawaiian park known for its volcanoes. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park says Kīlauea volcano is erupting for the fifth time in four years.

You can watch a live stream of the volcano in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park here:

According to a press release, the eruption is coming from the summit crater with multiple lava fountains, creating a lake of molten rock. Lava started flowing Sunday afternoon. The national park is located on Hawaii’s Big Island. As of now, all volcanic activity is confined to the park. There is no current threat to any homes or communities.

Not everyone is watching the live stream of the volcano, as the volcanic activity is attracting extra visitors to the park. Park Rangers want to remind everyone about safety precautions and the sacredness of the volcano to the Hawaiian people.

While an eruption is somewhat unpredictable, the optimal viewing of the lava lake and fountains are at Uēkahuna, Kīlauea Overlook and areas along Crater Rim Trail.

Visitors should stay on trails and avoid closed areas. Also, be cautious around cliff edges as they are unstable. Park Rangers also stress that hazardous volcanic gases can be harmful, especially to young children, the elderly, pregnant people and those with respiratory issues.

Finally, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park staff want to remind visitors to “Observe the eruption quietly and respect Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners who honor the sacred legacy of this land and give them space to practice their customs.”

Here are some additional tips to observe a volcano safely.

A man in British Columbia, Canada, captured the scene of a black bear taking extreme measures to access some honey.

Ryan Chadwick shared a video on his Instagram account with the simple label “Anything for that sweet, sweet honey.”

The bear ripped up floorboards in the video to access a honey bee hive. The onlookers weren’t able to do anything but watch.

Chadwick didn’t share much information, but in the comments, he says the incident happened at a friend’s house. Slightly before the bear arrived, Chadwick says he offered to help the friend remove the hive, but now the bear has taken care of it.

This time of year for black bears is when they begin their hyperphagia, which is preparing for hibernation. It essentially sends the bears into a feeding frenzy.

Wildlife officials say bears will go to new extremes to fill their desire for food. People should be extra vigilant this time of year and properly dispose of trash and not leave food in any place that a bear could access.

Outdoors.com has contacted Chadwick for more information about his post but have not yet heard back.

Another wildlife crossing highlighted by a state’s transportation department shows how pivotal these human-made structures are in protecting animals and people.

Washington State Department of Transportation’s Snoqualmie Pass Twitter account shared a video showing a mix of animals crossing over Interstate 90.

The video includes elk, a bobcat and otters using the land bridge to avoid traffic below. Interestingly, crossing stays busy no matter the time of day.

While these structures are great for conservation, they also protect people. Around 200 people are killed every year in collisions with wild animals. According to car insurance company State Farm, you are most at risk for crashes involving deer. Here’s a look:

  • Deer (1,378,542 crashes)
  • Unidentified animals (235,836 crashes)
  • Rodents (101,949 crashes)
  • Dogs (60,316 crashes)
  • Raccoons (56,096 crashes)

The company says drivers need to pay attention to roadways, especially in areas with the risk of a wildlife crossing.

Elk rutting season is in full swing, and wildlife officials want you to know that the animals need their space.

National parks like Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain have announced additional advisories for visitors. Elks can be particularly aggressive during the rut, which is their mating season. People should stay at least 25 yards or two bus lengths from the animals. NPS officials say if an elk approaches you, back away immediately. If it charges, run.

In some areas, like Rocky Mountain National Park, there are closures to keep both the elk and visitors safe.

During the rut, male elks let out a high-pitched bugle to try to impress female elks. A man living in Estes Park, just outside Rocky Mountain National Park, captured this elk’s bugle on video.

A social media video of a woman touching a Portuguese man o’war is a reminder not to mess with wildlife.

The person who posted the TikTok video has since deleted their account. However, a few screenshots shared online show the animal in a plastic cup. The woman in the video then touches the animal with her hands and appears to go in for a kiss. She does avoid being stung.

Many believe the man o’war is a jellyfish but is actually a siphonophore, a separate classification closely related to jellyfish. However, one thing both creatures share is a painful sting.

The man o’war uses its sting to kill fish that it then consumes. The animal does this with its tentacles containing microscopic capsules loaded with barbed tubes that eject the venom. While the sting is not usually deadly to a person, it’s very painful, and can easily leave a welt on someone’s skin.

Portuguese man o’wars live in warmer waters throughout the Atlantic Ocean. Wildlife officials say even if the animal is washed up on the beach, it can still sting you, so it’s best to avoid them altogether.

Want to see just how painful? Check out this video from animal experts at Brave Wilderness:

You may be used to “Florida Man” headlines, but this story is about a bear and is just as wild.

A Florida homeowner says a bear broke into their patio while her 13-year-old son was home with just the dog. The entire incident was captured on camera as a dog barks and panic sets in that a bear continues to claw its way around.

Josaury Faneite-Diglio spoke to local news affiliate WESH about the incident. She says she received an alert from the home’s security camera. She saw a bear walking around her patio when she watched the video.

“He ate the fish food we had outside next to our fish tank and then proceeded to the bar,” Faneite-Diglio told WESH in an interview. “He took three White Claws, drank, and left very happy. His favorite flavor is mango and strawberry.”

The bear is known locally for having only three legs. People in the area have nicknamed the animal “Tripod.”

Fortunately, Tripod left shortly after entering the patio and didn’t leave too much of a mess behind.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, black bears are prevalent in the state. As other wildlife officials suggest, people should try to properly dispose of food while securing trash cans to help keep bears away from homes.

A recent video shared on social media serves as a good reminder of how massive wolves really are.

@Rainmaker1973 posted a video from the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center. You can see a woman petting one of the animals in the video that towers over her.

Replies to the post include, “I had no idea they get that big” and “I always wondered how big they were, but wisely, I’ve not been so close in the wild.”

The Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center offers interactive tours with rescued wolves and wolf-dog hybrids. The organization allows visitors to be among the animals under the close watch of their caretakers. Even though the rescued animals at the center are highly socialized, visitors still sign a waiver acknowledging that these are wild animals.

The organization focuses on conservation and education, and the popular video on social media is contributing to these efforts. The wolf in the video seems massive because it is; wolves really do get that big.

How Big Are Wolves?

Although they may be closely related to some dog breeds, wolves can easily be double the size of your pet. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says gray wolves can grow to be 175 pounds. The size is massive compared to a husky, which on average can make it up to 60 pounds, or an Alaskan Malamute, which can hit 80 pounds.

Wildlife officials say it’s important to note that wolves’ size depends on climate and location. Colder weather often means a larger wolf, with their larger body size being helpful in dealing with harsh conditions.

If you’re ever questioning whether you saw a wolf or coyote, remember that coyotes are about a third of the size of wolves. The smaller cousin usually only weighs in at 22-33 pounds when they’re fully grown.

Here’s what you should do if you ever encounter wolves in the wild.

After days of heavy rains, organizers have given revelers and others at Burning Man the okay to go home.

Burning Man, an infamous festival that takes place annually in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada brings together art, community, self-reliance, and various levels of debauchery. The festival gained another level of notoriety as people struggled to leave the barren desert location this year. The inclement weather left many cars and other vehicles trapped, blocking thousands from leaving.

This year’s eventgoers included Chris Rock and Diplo, who had to hike for hours before hitching a ride. The two recorded the events in a viral social media post.

After the flooding on Friday morning, organizers warned campers to conserve food as a timeline to leave was unsure. Unfortunately, authorities are investigating at least one death at the event. Additional details were not made available, but investigators say it’s not weather-related.

Burning Man organizers announced people could leave on Monday afternoon but suggested people try and stagger their exit to avoid mass traffic.

“Take it slow and mind those directing traffic,” CNN reported an update read. “Please be patient as you exit through Gate Road, and respect Burning Man staff who are working hard to make the Exodus experience as smooth and safe as possible.”

Organizers say they focus heavily on “Leave No Trace” principles. The event has a team that comes in afterward to clean up. However, with trapped vehicles and many leaving the event on foot, it’s fair to assume this year’s event cleanup will take longer. The Black Rock Desert is part of the Bureau of Land Management.
